meine meinung |

You know Bernd, the day I went to see this movie I had on my mind two things. First, Jennifer Lopez is not a great actress, so I should focus on what the story is about to see if it is any good. And second, I really like twisted plots where people do 'unusual' things. I mean, come on! how is to get into some one else's head and figure things out? I wish I could do that with my friends sometimes. jajajaja. Anyway, after seeing it, I guess that my opinion about JLO has changed... she's not a Julia Roberts, but she is picking up on her acting little by little. The whole story was really interesting, but it would have been so much nicer if there had been a little romancing between JLO and the cop, I mean...why not?

Cinematography in this film can be broken down into pieces. First they did such a magnificent job in the creation of the worlds inside the kid's head, and the bad guy's head. WOW. What better representation of how screwed they were inside could you possibly ask for? On the other hand, the way the 'real' world was shot was really conventional, and the contrast between 'real' world and 'mind' world is really high. Things could had been shot in a way that the difference was not that much, I mean, other color filters, some other ways of coloring the film. I don't know I get picky about that kind of stuff. What do you think? Did you like the film or you just saw it to see Jennifer Lopez? jajajaja.

Ok, let me try to find the right words, about what I'm thinking. I will begin with one sentence: "The Cell" is a really bad movie, but it looks fantastic. And sure, that is because of Jennifer Lopez, he he. It’s a fact, that she's pretty. And I think, she isn't a bad actress. For this kind of movie, her talent is really enough. I enjoyed :) her playing!

I agree with you - the idea of the movie is interesting. Going to someone else's mind is a talent, we all want to use... But I think that’s all of good words about the plot. I think the rest really sucks!

The problem I have with "The Cell" is that this movie reminds me too much to others. Think about it - there are so many parallels to films like "The Silence Of The Lambs", "Seven", and “Nightmare on Elm Street". The costumes are looking exactly like the ones in "Dracula". I know the costume designer is the same, but has it really be the same look?

Tarsem Singh is a Director of Music Videos. And that’s his big problem. The visual aspects are good, but the story looks like ripped of and is just bad! Come on, the whole thing is so much unrealistic! I could tell you a lot of scenes, but it would take too long, and some people will hate me, because I say too much about the story... Please understand me - I know this is a horror movie, and it has to be unrealistic. I'm not talking about the scenes inside the brain. No - the real world scenes are so bad! First the police are so good; find the killers place in a few hours.... Then the killer falls into a long life coma. He takes a bath, needs his medicine and has an empty medicine box besides the bath. Come on - if you were ill just like him - what do you do? Maybe you will take a new box of pills beside you? No - not the killer... And why? Just because J-Lo has to go to his brain to find out where the last victim is hiding... Do you know what I mean; there are a lot of scenes like that... And I don't want to talk about the really bad ending...

And because of this really bad story - the only thing's left is the visual aspect. Yes, this is very nice! The scenes inside the "brain" are fantastic. I really enjoyed them.

What do you think? Do you like the story? Did you find out the parallels to other movies? Do you agree with me, that "The Cell" is just a visual product, like a good Music Video? For me it looks like, Singh has lots of ideas for the style of the movie, but he forgets the story and the characters....

HAROLD |

jajajjjajajaaaj! Bernd you got that damn right! It is perhaps the best use of special effects in both editing, and computer aided visuals for the worst plot ever arranged. I mean, the whole concept is really interesting. WOW, I would love to get in someone's head every now and then, but the ways the events have been put together are sort of weak. I really think that JLo's acting was enough to portray the twisted character she played. I mean, a pretty girl with no life, watching strange cartoons at night, and only enough will for her work. (The typical case here in NY)

About the plot...I got to tell you, I almost asked for my money back at the cinema's counter. There is no tweaking to the story, no back and forth, nothing. Just a plain story of maybe two or three days in the lives of the characters. I really dislike movies like that unless they have a meaning, or are trying to portray something larger than life...like Magnolia for example. But in this case I see nothing special in terms of storytelling, I guess the spent all the money in special effects and fancy set designs rather than getting the script stronger or the story go deeper.

I think the fact that costumes look like other movies is that they try to remind us that we are inside a character that has been influenced negatively by all sorts of stuff. History books, maybe movies he has seen, witchcraft, really twisted stuff that he collects ant etc...They really borrowed from "Nightmare on Elm Street" in terms of clothing and set designs in several parts. But I really have to tell you this; they enhanced every single detail with special effects. I found myself watching a movie only because of effects mixed with music, rather than grabbing its essence.

Everything is so predictable; every aspect of the story is so linearly silly. At times it really looks like another JLo music video; in fact, If you grab some of the footage from that movie and make a music video based in it you will have something really nice. But to me the whole thing does not click...if you are going to do such a horror movie make it interesting. How can the police be so good? How can events be predicted like that? After seeing this movie and seeing the commercials of "Dude, where is my car" I truly believe that anybody with some fame and some bucks can be in the movie...Cinema is losing respect with films like this. All of this without even mentioning the really stupid open ending which really makes me beg that there will be no sequel to this junk.

The director does forget about story and character representation and focuses more in visual approaches of the setting. He did a great job in that, maybe next time he should work side to side with some one who cares about story and script...maybe he could make a fine product. Not that I only went to see Jlo's body (you do believe me right? :D ) But maybe, and just maybe, I believe that if some romance should had taken place, and we had had more killings going on by this serial killer, this would had been a great movie. Like, if we had spent 50 minutes in the search for the killer as he has gotten away with some, let's say 5 murderers...and then we build this momentum to find him...and then we get a chance to see inside his twisted head you know? This guy throws this movie in the market and insults me...I need to be entertained! but give me some high class entertainment man! don’t fool me with visuals only! what do you think?

BERND |

Thanks! You are the first, who agree with me, that the story really sucks! My friends saying that this is a great movie. Sorry, I can't agree with them. I think if Tarsam Singh doesn’t want to make a good movie, with interesting story, he better go back to the music video business! "The Cell" is a big, long and very stylish music video... That’s all! I was very disappointed! What do you think? Enough words about this movie? Do you like to talk about the only good scenes? The "INSIDE THE KILLERS BRAIN SCENES"?

HAROLD |

Gosh man!...I can't get that scene of the horse being cut in pieces off my head when I talk about that movie!...what about the whole scenario, with all those lethal Barbie dolls, and those editing effects that made the picture jump. [tan tan tan!] That was awesome, I mean, you have to have a twisted imagination my friend to even think of something like that. The general opinion among the guys I am currently working with is that they knew that the whole movie was going to be an especial effect fest. They only went to see JLO get freaky with the cop, and she did not...so you can imagine their disappointment. I think she should try doing a serious movie, a top of the line role that will wipe away the idea that she is only put in movies because of her body. I think she has a talent for acting, but she has not showed it just yet. Other scene that I really loved is the one at the end, in her mind where she is about to kill the bad guy. WOAH like Neo would say, did you see the silhouette of this guy hiding, he is a character! an interesting psychedelic one! I loved that scene. He should have hit her once or twice to make it more interesting though, she did not get hit at all.

I really agree that this is a long music video, and would love to see this director embody the depiction of a more developed plot. Also, I just hope that JLO gets better roles in the future, I mean, I am Latin and would like to see her nominated for Acting awards pretty soon.

BERND |

Yes, the scenes you mentioned are great. This is fantastic work! I think, these brilliant scenes, together with a good story and the film would be a masterpiece! Yes, Jennifer is nice! Let’s hope together, she gets better roles... But what was her last movie? Is the "Wedding Planner" a better role? I don't think so... But this doesn't belong in this film talk.... To come to an end... I think we both agree this time. "The Cell" is a brilliant visual film, with a very nice J-Lo ;) but the story is not that good... But I think everybody should see this movie...

HAROLD |

I have not seen that movie, and probably never will. But about "The Cell", I anybody who goes see it should go without expecting anything amazing but the visuals. In fact, if I had known what it was about, I would had waited for someone to rent it and not spend my money on seeing it at the cinema.
